Benign prostate hyperplasia [bph] is an enlarge prostate gland. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. When the prostate gets enlarged, it squeezes or partly blocks the urethra, this often cause problem in urinating. BPH is common problem among men, it occurs in almost every man as they age. BPH is not cancer, it is not a serious condition but almost half of the men develop benign prostate hyperplasia [bph] after 75 years of age. Benign prostate hyperplasia [bph] is also known as benign prostatic hypertrophy.

Benign prostate hyperplasia [bph] is caused due to the change in the hormone balance and cell growth. It is in fact a common problem of aging. The exact reason for the problem is yet unknown. Variety of factors are said to be involved like androgens (male hormones), estrogens, growth factors and other cells signaling pathway. The prostate grow large due to the increased number of cells (hyperplasia). Many a times, the contraction of urinary tracts leads to several medical conditions like urinary tract infection, bladder or kidney damage and sudden inability to urinate.

BPH causes urinary problems; person will find trouble in getting urine stream started and completely stop. It often feels like you need to urinate and this feeling wake you up many times at night, weak urinate and the senses that your bladder is not completely empty even after you urinate. In few cases, BPH may cause blockage in the bladder, making it hard to urinate. This problem causes bladder infection, stone or kidney damage. BPH does not cause prostate cancer or erection problem.

Treatment is not required until the symptoms bothers you or you have other problem like backed urine, bladder infection or bladder stones. Doctor will start the treatment by questioning about the signs and symptoms and past health. Several physical tests are performed to diagnose the problem like urine test (urinalysis), a blood test and a digital rectal exam; which enables the doctor to feel the size of your prostate. In few cases, prostate- specific antigen test is included to diagnose prostate cancer although prostate cancer and BPH are not the same but they can cause some of the specific symptoms. Your doctor might conduct a study on you regarding the symptoms of the BPH, S/he may ask you that how often you have symptoms, hoe severe are they and how much they affect your life. If the symptoms are mild to moderate than home treatment is all that you need to control it. Doctor might ask you to keep a check on the symptoms and make sure you do not develop any other problem. See your doctor within a fixed period of time; do not leave the treatment in the middle of it.
